| David
Rogers-Smith is a versatile performer in classical, musical theatre and cabaret
styles. With a Bachelor of Education in Music (Melbourne University) behind him,
his career began as a chorister with solo tenor appearances including the title
role in Britten’s St Nicholas Cantata, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem
and the Melbourne premiere of Lloyd Webber’s Requiem. He also sang in the
chorus with the Australian Opera for Verdi’s Requiem, and performed with the a
capella group ‘The Phones’. In
1993, David became a member of the ensemble of The Phantom of the Opera, understudying
the role of operatic tenor, Ubaldo Piangi. He played the role many times
opposite Christa Leahmann, Helen Noonan and Margaret Haggart. During this time
he studied with Robert Gard OBE. David left Phantom to join the Asian/African
tour of Les Miserables in which he played the role of the thug Brujon and
understudied the starring role of Jean Valjean. During
the Cape Town season of Les Miserables, David was invited back to Australia
to play the role of Piangi for the Australasian tour. He played approximately
1000 performances in Brisbane, Adelaide, Auckland, Melbourne and Perth. He then
played in The Three Tenors, for corporate functions and wrote and starred
in his first cabaret show David Rogers-Smith - UNPLUGGED!! David
has also starred in Jack Hibberd’s Dimboola; Big Stuff (a tribute to Leonard
Bernstein with Natalie and Mark Jones); Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging
Queens; as General Kromov in The Merry Widow with Marina Prior; and
his highly acclaimed Ziegfeld Tenor opposite Caroline O'Connor in Funny Girl
for the Production Company. A different role was walking cover to the drag/soprano
role of Mary Sunshine in Chicago. In
1999 David starred with rave revues as Buddy Plummer in Follies in Concert
at the Crown Showroom with Nancye Hayes and John O’May and A Night at the
Opera with Independent Classics. In 2000, a Bastille Day Cabaret with Denise
Shepherd; A Night At The Opera 2000; starring in Forbidden Broadway
2000, a cabaret review with impersonations of Mandy Patinkin, Topol and a
soprano nun amongst many others; Gaugin – A Synthetic Life with ChamberMade
Opera and a new Three Tenors corporate act. David
had a hit with both sold-out and return seasons at Chapel Off Chapel of Stephen
Sondheim’s Marry Me A Little and a sell out with the cabaret show There
Are Bears In There. 2001 also saw David’s operatic debut in the Melbourne
Festival’s flagship Salome with the Kirov Opera; A Night at the Opera
2001 and his acclaimed Nessun Dorma in Hats Off at the National Theatre. 2002
saw David in three cabaret show including The Bears; performing with Independent
Classics as a soloist in their Proms series (Melbourne Town Hall) and various
concerts, and singing Nessun Dorma again with the corporate act The
Three Waiters. 2003
saw David perform the leading role of Michele in The Saint of Bleecker Street
(described as “magnificently sung” by THE AGE and “brilliantly portrayed”
by the HERALD SUN) and a new one man show Being Alive (with a return by
popular demand performance); Mozart’s The Impresario for Emotionworks
plus a morning melodies show From Pirates to Phantom. David also sang
Mozart’s Requiem at St Patrick’s Cathedral as well as singing Flavours
of America in the Barossa Festival with Guila Tiver and Greg Roberts.
David finished off 2003 with a concert at the Melbourne Town Hall as soloist with
the Melbourne Youth Orchestra and starring with Amelia Farrugia and Roger Lemke
in Deep In My Heart with The Australian Pops Orchestra at the Sydney Opera
House. In 2004 David made his debut performance with the Sydney Symphony
at the Opera House; wrote and performed Thoughts Unspoken at Chapel Off
Chapel (directed by Shaun Murphy); starred in two MYO concerts at the Melbourne
Town Hall; sang the role of Lieutenant Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with
Melbourne Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre; sang as the tenor soloist in Lloyd Webber's
Requiem; and the role of St Nicholas in Benjamin Britten's St Nicholas
Cantata. He performed again with The Australian Pops Orchestra at the Melbourne
Concert Hall in The Best of British. The year finished off with Carols
at Como Park complete with fireworks. 2005
saw a reprise of the role of Pinkerton in Butterfly ("powerful and
lusty...a fine characterisation" - Sunday Herald Sun); a brand new cabaret
show, Feeling Good back at Chapel Off Chapel and Kingston; featuring in
The Proms at the Melbourne Town Hall; a classical recital Music is
the Food of Love at The Assembly Hall; the Missa Criolla with the National
Boys Choir at Hamer Hall and various Carols. In
2006 David toured as a member of the international cast of The Phantom of the
Opera to Taipei and Hong Kong, reprising his role as the operatic tenor Piangi,
and put together a new cabaret show with Mark Jones at the piano. 2007
has seen some cabaret dates and Phantom in Singapore and Melbourne (so far). |
